Ingeborg discovered her gift for reading aloud almost accidentally when she was asked to join an event where poets read their own work.

In the biography Ingeborg describes the beginning of her "stage" career. A few female poets organised the evening, and they called and asked if Ingeborg wanted to come.

This story has a Cinderella character, from the slightly patronising attitude of the woman calling her ("One might not count you among lyric poets - -- (...) Nobody will expect much from you so don't worry - --") to the huge success.

"I suddenly got onstage and started reading "Jeg vil hem att", but I didn't get far because people started clapping.

The applauce was confusing and a bit scary, so I asked people to keep quiet until I finished. Then it was dead silent to the end of the poem.

When I finished, the applauce was thundering, and I stumbled off stage - - - "

That was the start of Ingeborg's career as reciter. She was engaged by the manager Rulle Rasmussen and toured with a program of own poems, spellbinding audiences all over Norway and parts of Scandinavia.
