Ingeborg lost her father
at the age of eleven

"She suddenly realised.
Her fairy tale childhood in "Mostua", was over."

Ingeborg and her five sisters and brothers deeply felt the loss of her father.

Several of Ingeborg's experiences from this period later suface in her writings. She saw exploitation of "widows and fatherless", and felt the poverty that drove so many Norwegians to migration.

The poem below is an example of how these experiences show up in Ingeborg's writing. It loses somewhat in the translation - you may want to compare with the original on the Norwegian version of this page.

"With heavy steps outside the house
a group of men is coming
carrying their friend.
The door thrown open by the storm
no word or explanation is required:

father! father!"

Quotations from "Eventyr and historier fra Mostua" and the poem "Ærens mark". Drawing by Olav Bjørgum, for 7th volume of "Eventyr og Historier fra Mostua".
