THE STEIN
SCHOOL

Erling Elverhøy, teacher and old friend of Ingeborg, one day happened to complain about how ugly his school was. How did the children react to the ugly surroundings?

Per Teigen has caught the atmosphere:
"Ingeborg overseeing the workers"

Together they transformed the Stein school into Norway's most beautiful:

  • They raised funding through lotteries and recital evenings
  • Carpenters repaired everything that was old and ugly
  • Every room was painted in beautiful colors, and Norway's best artists contributed decorations and artworks

Erling, Ingeborg and their collaborators worked almost literally around the clock: in the evening they organised and performed in fundraising events, and during the day and sometimes nighttimes as well, they were painting and decorating the school. And with the slogan

"When you build
palaces for children,
you tear the prisons down"

the Stein school was transformed into a fairy tale of beauty.

The sink was painted with water lilies, the teacher's desk with anemones. Doors and interiors were decorated with scenes from children's songs or old sayings.

Birgit Abrahamsen, Karl and Per Teigen, Reidar Aulie, Oda Krogh, Ørnulf Bast - the list of contributing artists shows that Ingeborg used every contact in the art world. And everyone, even friends who would gladly have given her the artworks, were paid for their work. The outlays on paint and carpentry, and artist wages meant fundraising was a permanent headache... Ingeborg might well need ideas like Mitja Bulba!!

The Stein school today is a museum.
